Learning Opportunities

Private Piano Lessons

Private piano lessons are offered weekly in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions, depending on the student’s age & ability. Scales, pieces, aural training, technical exercises, sight reading & music theory are covered in the lessons. Also, students will have the opportunity to compose their own music. Students are expected to practise daily on a well-maintained acoustic piano or a digital piano. Please visit My Teaching Philosophy and Lessons for more information.

Online Piano Lessons

Piano lessons are conducted on Zoom, FaceTime, Skype or your preferred application. Teaching materials will be provided. The effectiveness of online piano lessons are evident as many students enjoy the convenience and success of achieving a variety of learning outcomes. Online piano lessons are offered in 30, 45 or 60 minute sessions and cover the same topics as private piano lessons.

Music Theory Lessons

Music theory is beneficial for students to understand the language of music and think independently from the earliest stage of learning. A solid foundation of music theory gives students the confidence in performing different styles of music rationally and scientifically. As a student progresses, the connection between technical skills and musical knowledge becomes increasingly important, which is essential to a deeper appreciation of how music is constructed.

Music theory exam is a prerequisite for certain advanced level of practical exams held by The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB). Students will have the option to take music theory lessons alongside their traditional piano lessons.

Aural Skills

The importance of aural skills is often overlooked. In fact, it is crucial for musicians to be able to identify important musical elements such as intervals, chord progressions, cadences, scale degrees, rhythm, melody and pitches by ear. Aural training is integrated as part of piano lessons at the initial stage of learning. Singing will also be introduced in the lessons. Students are encouraged to identify and play different pieces by ear. In this way, students will develop an accurate and reliable inner voice which will further enhance their ability and confidence in performing music.

Exam Preparation

Comprehensive training is provided for students to sit for exams held by Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM), the Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) and Trinity College London. Students will have the opportunities to sit for both practical and theory exams. Please visit Student Achievement for more information. Also, lessons can also be tailored to HSC Music 1, Music 2 and Music Extension.
